Funko brings back my childhood!

We love Funko around here. Their POP! vinyl figures have always been a lot of fun but lately they have been bringing some really great things out. Every time I look at some of the in stock and up and coming products I can’t help but think of my  childhood. He Man, Back to the Future, TMNT, Power Rangers, and now the announcement of The Goonies! Could there be anything more exciting?

The best part of the Funko POP! line is the diversity of the licensing. They have so many genres options from comic books, movies,  tv shows, and Disney just to name a few. In some cases it’s the only time you can expect to see a product from these licenses made. Take The Goonies for example. It’s not the ’80s anymore so expectations for stumbling across a Chunk figure are pretty low until now.

May the Weekend Be With You

Similar to a few weeks ago we have another great weekend overflowing with geekdom.  So much to do I can’t decide how i want to spend my time.

The weekend begins on midnight on Thursday with the opening of Iron Man 3

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day and “May the Fourth Be with You!” both recently created holidays.  Free Comic Book Day started in 2002 as a collaboration between comic shop and publishers with the goal to gain new fans by publishing free comics for people to use as a jumping on point into the larger world of comics. Today it has become Black Friday like for comic book shops with huge sales, costume contests, and comic creator signs.  Geek Triumvirate will be a few places this Saturday.  The Comics Club, Read More Comics, Heroes Haven, Desert Dune Comics, and Ultimate Comics.  For more information visit Free Comic Book Day.

Saturday is May 4th or better know as “May the Fourth be with you” day.  Started on social media to celebrate the date that is similar to the famous phrase from the Star Wars films “May the Force be with you” .  The date has now become annual event to celebrate all things Star Wars.  Disney Hollywood Studios was already planning to have Star Wars celebration throughout May and June but last week they announce on May 4th they were going to have events at the park featuring Star Wars characters attending rides, a symphony performance, and a fireworks show. For more information about Disney’s Hollywood Studios “limited time magic” Star Wars celebration click image below.

You also have a new episode of Doctor Who and Game of Thrones both hitting their strides a few episodes deep into the season. Plus NHL PLAYOFFS!

Burning rubber at Disney’s new Test Track

Recently I went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT to experience some of the latest attractions and share via our twitter machine some of the more unique things to find if your a veteran park visitor such as myself.  Here is a gallery of the highlights.

  • Hollywood Studios was hosting a high school dance team competition so all the teenage girls running around made me feel like high school and i was just the uncool kid again.
  • Updated Chevrolet Test Track is great.  They increase the speed, got rid of cheesy test video, and went for a cool Tron vibe.  Click here to see my test vehicle’s commercial.
  • I wanted to see the new Legend of Jack Sparrow at Hollywood Studios but a 30 minute wait for a walking tour just did not seem like how I want to waste my day.
  • You don’t need to take the tours to see all the great animation display at Art of Animation or back-lot tour to see the AFI Showcase of movie memorabilia   This was recently updated from a villains exhibit they have had for years.

Look in the coming weeks for more Disney related insight such as a full list of tips and secrets for each park.

Geeks were the real Superbowl winners

Iron Man 3 trailer

Baltimore Ravens may have won the game but last night was really a victory for geeks everywhere as multiple geekdom movie trailers premiered and a nerd got to make out with a hot swimsuit model in that slightly creepy Godaddy.com commercial. The two trailers I was most looking forward to was Star Trek Into Darkness and Iron Man 3 both which delivered. Here are the many teaser trailers from last night.

Lone Ranger trailer

Oz the Great and Powerful trailer

World War Z trailer

Don’t forget Wil Wheaton in the #SteerTheScript commercial!

Tune in tomorrow to the GeekTri News Feed/Time Line thing (I don’t know what they are calling these days) for pictures, fun, and memories our one and only Nate could provide!

Personalizing the Happiest Place on Earth

Monday morning it was reported Disney would begin a major upgrade to their theme parks to help how guests plan and visit.

The new system called MyMagic+ would combine RFID bracelet technology with web and mobile apps to give a guest the power to plan more effecfiently before they visit and even purchase food or merchandise. Guests could even get a unique relationship with a cast members and rides because they will know the name/s of your or favorite character/s. For more information read the full news story at NY Times.

This sound like a stupendous idea and is an inventive step forward for the Walt Disney Company. However some of it I don’t see working out so well such as the turnstile portion; I have attended Walt Disney World quite a bit in the past few years and on three occasions was visiting on a day while they were experimenting with a sort of new turnstile technology in an attempt speed up the line. In every case the process seemed flawed and inefficient.

Having access to FastPass via the My Disney Experience website and app will create richer vacation experiences for those coming to the park for the first time. I don’t think you should over plan when visiting the parks but one thing I always tell people is they should pick a few key attractions to experience at each park and do those first so they remainder of the day you can go with the flow as the park gets busier so if you could have access FastPasses before you even enter the park I save some of the stress of getting to particular FastPass stations.

I love the idea of being able to plan as well as having easier access to FastPass and having personal interaction with the cast members and park itself. When I visited the park on my birthday the best experience I had was when Mary Poppins darted across Fantasy-land to wish me a happy birthday, and that was only because she noticed my birthday button. So the idea they could even further create memories like that with this new technology is worth the investment.

I would also be weary of providing too much information and unsure about using it for purchasing items, RFID techonology is already simple to hack and with that many people around in one area thieves could have access to many peoples information.
